Where do I start?
1. Establish your goals. It is important to prioritize your responsibilities and have goals for the future in order to establish a solid financial foundation. The first step in investing is to identify those goals, perhaps you would like to buy a new home, pay for a child's future college education, or save for retirement. Write down yoru goals, how long you have to accomplish them, and how much risk you are willing to take investing your money. Develop a strategy to investing and stick to it. The numerous investing options and tax implications can be very complex, which is why it is helpful to have an agent, financial advisor, or an insurance agent (like us!) to assist you!
2. Educate yourself. Simply by visiting this website, you have taken the first step toward investing successfully, educating yourself. Once you have established your goals, you need to decide how you would like to invest your money. Some investments have a very high risk, while others are very conservative. Diversification and risk are two terms you should familiarize yourself with.
- Diversification refers to distributing (investments) among different companies or securities in order to limit losses in the event of a fall in a particular market or industry. For example, if you have an Invernational Fund, and are looking to diversify your portfolio, it would be beneficial to invest in a Domestic Fund to spread the risk in case one of the two does not yield positive return.
- Risk is the chance that the value or return on teh investment could be lower than expected. Usually, the higher the risk, the greater the potential return (note: "potential" is in italics).
3. Talk to a professional. As mentioned before, investing can be very complex and it is important to talk to a professional to help you understand and invest your money in the best possible way.
